The Boys & Girls Club serves youth across Skagit County working closely with youth and local schools to improve the academic success of youth. The Washington Reading Corps (WRC) is a national service program that is actively engaged in improving literacy in communities, local schools and learning centers throughout Washington State. In collaboration with the state's Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, projects in this program focus on tutoring struggling readers in Kindergarten through fourth grade, and preparing young children for successful entry into Kindergarten and literacy achievement in Early Learning Centers. The position is a full-time service commitment totaling a 1700 hour term (average of 40 hours per week). Member stipend of $1,945.24 per month before taxes and education award of $6,345 upon successful completion of service hours. Inquire about availability if selected for an interview. Member Duties : In order to support Boys & Girls Club's priority outcome of Academic success, WRC members will engage in direct-service /K-4 literacy tutoring (one-on-one or in small groups) AND will develop and implement literacy-based programming and literacy based resouces that can be utilized during the school day and after school. In addition to providing literacy support at the Boys & Girls Club WRC will also spend time during the school day at the local elementary schools supporting students during reading instruction times and work with English Language Learners and coordinate activities to increase English proficiency. WRC will also strive to engage families and community in literacy events and projects and work with the Mentoring Coordinator to develop or expand existing volunteers for reading support. *Complete national service program requirements including: reporting, trainings, professional learning cluster meetings, and community service projects based around National Days of Service.
