21-22 Puget Soundkeeper Alliance Volunteer Coordinator

Everyone has the right to clean water that is fishable, swimmable and drinkable. Puget Soundkeeper is a local nonprofit based in Seattle with the mission to protect and enhance the waters of Puget Sound for the health and restoration of our aquatic ecosystems and the communities that depend on them. Puget Soundkeeper is part of the Waterkeeper Alliance, a worldwide organization made up of over 300 waterkeepers dedicated to protecting their local bodies of water. Communities surrounding Puget Sound are in need of water pollution education and hands-on engagement activities such as beach cleanups. Our goal is to create active community members that are involved in critical water quality issues. The AmeriCorps member will help achieve this goal by engaging with the public through our volunteer/outreach events and virtual opportunties. The Stewardship Coordinator will begin holding interviews end of May and continue until the beginning of July.

Member Duties : The AmeriCorps member will assist the Stewardship Coordinator by planning and coordinating a variety of volunteer events. These events include beach cleanups, on-the-water pollution patrols via kayaks and boat, and community-science opportunities (microplastic analysis, salmon monitoring and mussel monitoring). Some of the main tasks include coordinating and recruiting volunteers, set up/break down of events, volunteer data entry, creating educational materials, etc. A lot of public speaking is involved during volunteer trainings and while leading events. Please note, the AmeriCorps member must be comfortable working in most weather conditions. Another area the AmeriCorps member will help in is outreach/education. The AmeriCorps member will be engaging with the public in virtual settings such as Zoom meetings/webinars. The member will also develop content for our website such as blogs and calendar updates and post to our social media sites.
