Leschi Elementary is looking for two full-time AmeriCorps-funded literacy tutors for the 2021-2022 school year. The Washington Reading Corps is a national service program that is actively engaged in improving literacy in communities, local schools and learning centers throughout the state. In collaboration with the state's Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, projects in this program focus on: tutoring struggling readers in Pre- Kindergarten through sixth grade, and preparing young children for successful entry into Kindergarten and literacy achievement in Early Learning Centers. The position is a full-time service commitment totaling a 1700 hour term (average of 40 hours per week). • Member stipend of $1,945.24 per month before taxes. • Education award of $6,345 upon successful completion of service hours. • The option of basic health insurance • The opportunity to put qualified federal loans in forbearance while they serve • Childcare assistance. Position is contingent upon funding. The Washington Reading Corps is ideal for people who are taking a year off from/before college, making a career change, or interested in tutoring kids and giving back.

Member Duties : Members will engage in any or all of the following activities and projects to strengthen the WRC program: support recruitment of community volunteer tutor programs before and afterschool, enhance or create opportunities, work with English Language Learners and coordinate activities to increase English proficiency, family and community involvement events and projects, develop or expand existing volunteer recognition program, donation solicitation, support of WRC tutees during classroom reading instruction, and build community-based literacy resources that can be shared within and between schools
