Service Description : The Social Justice Learning Institute (SJLI) is dedicated to improving the education, health and well being of youth and communities of color by empowering them to enact social change through research, training and community mobilization. We privilege the ideas, voice, and leadership of our youth and community members. Located in Inglewood, CA, we serve Los Angeles County and Houston, Texas. We build capacity for individuals and communities to advocate for their needs; train and build leaders; and educate and empower youth and community members to identify and rectify injustice. This opportunity takes place with the Urban Scholars Houston program at Attucks Middle, Phillis Wheatley High, Sam Houston Math, Science and Technology Center, Clifton Middle schools, and our program office. Urban Scholars is a middle and high school course that integrates socio-emotional learning, trauma informed practices, leadership development and various activities. The course teaches students how to positively respond to negative elements in their lives and change their educational and life trajectories. Students gain and or accomplish: (1) an increased sense of self-efficacy, work ethic, level of critical consciousness, social and global awareness, and mindfulness; (2) a belief of the realistic possibility of attending college; (3) an understanding of what is needed to pursue a college and or career path; (4) increased awareness of themselves and the relationship to their community; (5) a desire to advocate for themselves and their communities; (6) matriculating through middle school and high school graduation; (7) applying, being accepted and graduating college; and (8) receiving scholarships and other financial support enabling college attendance. The 4 VISTA members will work in one of the following areas: (1) Financial Resources; (2) Expand/Strengthen Partnerships and Networks; and (3) Program Development and Delivery.

Member Duties : Member Duties : Build support, leverage resources, increase volunteer support, and engage with school and neighborhood community members. Specifically: 1) provide program support to the Urban Scholars Houston school sites serving 125-150 Black and Latin X middle and high school students; 2) coach and support school instructors; 3) provide individual student support; 4) make referrals to wrap around student services; 5) acquire, maintain and analyze student academic and behavioral records; 6) coordinate logistics for presentations, professional development workshops, college panels, field trips, retreats, and other off campus activities; 7) plan, develop and implement a Community Outreach plan; 8) create and implement a Communications Plan; 9) conduct social media campaign; 10) plan and produce special events, 11) assist with the formation of a Fundraising Plan, 12) support fundraising and resource development tasks.
